Colour Fun!

I can say the colour of things using 'It's [colour].'

It's [colour].

This frame lets beginners state the colour of any object using the fixed contraction 'It's' plus a colour adjective. It is the simplest way to practise colour vocabulary in a full sentence.

1. 5′Warm-up — Teacher holds up coloured scarves or cards one by one and says the colour word. Children repeat and clap the word twice. Play a quick 'point to something red/blue' game around the room.
2. 7′Presentation — Teacher shows flashcards one at a time, says 'It's red', 'It's blue', etc., and children echo the full sentence. Teacher then holds up two cards and asks children to choose, saying 'It's [colour]' each time.
3. 8′Practice — Teacher shows an object (a ball, a book, a toy) and asks 'What colour?' Children answer in chorus 'It's [colour]'. Then pairs take turns holding up a card to a partner who says the sentence aloud.
4. 7′Song — Teacher plays the song and does matching hand movements for each colour (wiggle fingers for yellow, hug for red, etc.). Children sing and copy actions, repeating the chorus loudly.
5. 3′Wrap-up — Teacher holds up cards fast and children shout the colour. Teacher says goodbye line 'It's a rainbow day!' and children wave and repeat.

Teaching tip — Encourage children to point at their own clothes or classroom objects that match each colour as they sing.

  Colour Point-and-Show

  Give each child seven colour crayons or cards (red, blue, yellow, green, orange, purple, pink). Read the script slowly. Children hold up the matching colour each time they hear it.

  What Colour Is It? Chant

  Teacher holds up a coloured object or card and asks the question. Children answer together as a class chant. Then pair up children to ask and answer with their own objects.

  Find the Colour Word

  Give children a worksheet with a picture of a coloured object next to three word choices. Children circle the word that matches the picture. Do the first one together as an example.

• writing

  Trace and Copy the Colours

  Give children a worksheet with each colour word printed in dotted/outline letters. Children trace each word, then copy it once on the line next to it. Walk around to help with pencil grip and letter formation.
